General Questions

5 common questions answered.

What is architectural film wrapping?

Architectural film wrapping applies a professional-grade, pressure-sensitive vinyl film directly over existing surfaces — cabinets, walls, furniture, doors and more. It transforms the appearance and performance of a surface in days, without demolition or replacement.

The film uses deep embossed, non-printed textures to replicate wood grain, stone, marble, fabric and solid color finishes with authentic tactile feel. It is used in residential homes, vacation rentals, hotels, commercial spaces and marine interiors worldwide.

Is this the same as 3M DI-NOC?

3M DI-NOC is the most well-known brand of architectural film — and an excellent product. However, it is not the only professional-grade option. Hawaii Film & Wrap installs film manufactured to our own Pacific brand specification: Polymeric PVC base, German Jowat Acrylic PSA adhesive, deep embossed non-printed textures, and equivalent performance ratings.

The key factors that determine quality are the material specification and the installation quality — not the brand name. We are happy to provide full technical data sheets for comparison on request.

Is architectural film the same as wallpaper or contact paper?

No. Consumer-grade contact paper and decorative vinyl are completely different products from professional architectural film. Key differences:

Professional architectural film uses Polymeric PVC base (not lower-grade calendered PVC)

German Jowat Acrylic PSA adhesive provides a permanent bond that is cleanly removable — not the weak or residue-leaving adhesive of craft vinyl

Surface coatings (PU scratch resistance, UV stabilizers) are absent in consumer products

Fire rating B1/Class A — consumer products are typically unrated or Class C

Lifespan: 7–12 years professional vs. 1–3 years consumer

Using our professional film installed by a trained applicator is as different from contact paper as a professional paint job is from a roller and a bucket.

What surfaces can be wrapped?

Almost any smooth, clean, non-porous hard surface is suitable. Common applications include:

  • Kitchen cabinets — doors, drawer fronts, side panels, frames
  • Walls — accent walls, backsplashes, feature panels, wood paneling
  • Bathroom vanities — cabinet doors, panels, shower surrounds
  • Furniture — wardrobes, desks, dining tables, dressers, shelving
  • Doors and architectural details — interior doors, window sills, stair risers, baseboards
  • Appliances — refrigerators, washers, elevator cab interiors
  • Marine interiors — yacht cabin panels, boat cabinetry

The most suitable substrate is any flat or gently curved surface in good structural condition. Our team assesses suitability during the free consultation.

What areas of Oahu do you serve?

We serve all of Oahu, including Honolulu, Hawaii Kai, Kailua, Kaneohe, Aiea, Pearl City, Ewa Beach, Kapolei, Mililani, North Shore and all Oahu marina facilities. Travel fees may apply for remote locations — confirm during your free quote.

Product & Finish Questions

5 common questions answered.

How many finishes do you offer?

We carry 200+ finishes across four series:

  • Wood Grain Series: Light Oak, White Oak, Natural Walnut, Dark Walnut/Wenge, Teak, Driftwood, Bamboo, Rosewood and more
  • Stone & Marble Series: Carrara White, Calacatta Gold, Slate, Concrete/Micro Cement, Travertine, Terrazzo, Onyx and more
  • Fabric & Textile Series: Linen, Canvas, Silk/Satin, Leather/Soft Grain, Felt/Suede and more
  • Solid Color Series: Matte White, Warm White, Light Grey, Charcoal, Sage Green, Navy, Matte Black, Blush, Terracotta, High Gloss finishes and more

We bring physical samples to your property for review before any project — seeing and feeling the finish in your actual space and light conditions is the only reliable way to make this decision.

What are the three product tiers?

We offer three performance grades of Pacific brand architectural film:

  • Standard Series (0.20mm): ideal for budget-conscious refreshes and spaces with limited direct sun
  • Scratch-Resistant Series (0.25mm + PU coat ≥2H): recommended for households with pets or children, high-traffic kitchens and commercial surfaces
  • Scratch + UV Series (0.25mm + PU coat + UV stabilizer ≥5yr): our Hawaii-recommended default — provides proven UV resistance for the island's intense sunlight

All three tiers use the same Polymeric PVC base, German Jowat Acrylic PSA adhesive, B1 fire rating and deep embossed non-printed textures.

Can I request a custom color or finish not in your catalog?

Yes, in many cases. Custom and special-order finishes are available with lead times of 2–4 weeks (note: all materials ship to Hawaii, which adds to lead time). Minimum order quantities may apply for custom colors. Contact us with your specific requirement and we will advise on availability and cost.

Can I get a sample before committing?

Yes. We offer a free sample pack service — request samples of your shortlisted finishes and we will bring or send physical panels for you to review at home. We strongly encourage this step before finalizing your finish selection. Samples look different in different light conditions, and Hawaii's natural light is unique.

Does the wood grain feel like real wood?

Our wood grain films use deep embossed (not printed) textures — the grain pattern is physically pressed into the film surface. You can feel the grain with your fingertips. Most people who run their hand across an installed wood grain panel are genuinely surprised by the tactile authenticity.

The visual depth also reflects light differently from flat surfaces — the embossed grain catches and scatters light the way real wood does, creating a convincing result at normal viewing distances.

It is not identical to real wood. But in an interior setting, at normal viewing and touching distance, the vast majority of guests and visitors cannot distinguish it from real wood veneer.

Installation Process

7 common questions answered.

How does the installation process work?

A typical kitchen cabinet wrap project follows this process:

  • 1. Free consultation: we visit your property, assess surfaces, take measurements and review finish samples with you
  • 2. Quotation: we provide a detailed written quote within 24 hours of the consultation
  • 3. Scheduling: we agree a date that works around your household or booking calendar
  • 4. Surface preparation: on the day, all surfaces are cleaned and degreased before any film is applied
  • 5. Film application: panels are precision-cut and applied using professional squeegee technique and heat activation for edges and curves
  • 6. Edge finishing: all edges are trimmed and sealed for a clean, professional result
  • 7. Hardware reinstallation and final inspection: hardware is reinstalled, and we walk through the completed work with you before leaving
  • 8. Ready to use: immediately — no drying time, no ventilation wait
How long does a typical project take?

Timeline varies by project scope:

  • Small kitchen (up to 10 cabinet doors): 1 day
  • Medium kitchen (10–20 doors): 1–2 days
  • Large kitchen (20+ doors): 2–3 days
  • Single bathroom vanity: 2–4 hours
  • Feature wall or backsplash: 2–4 hours
  • Full bathroom surface refresh: 1 day
  • Commercial space (café, office): 1–3 days
  • Yacht cabin interior: 1–2 days

All projects are ready to use immediately upon completion — no waiting time.

Do I need to empty my cabinets?

For cabinet door wrapping, you do not need to empty the cabinets — the doors are wrapped in place (or sometimes removed, wrapped flat, and reinstalled). However, it is helpful to clear the immediate countertop area of small appliances and items so our team has clear working access. We protect all surrounding surfaces before beginning work.

Can I stay in my home during installation?

Yes — this is one of the key advantages of architectural film wrapping. Our installation produces:

  • No VOC fumes or smell (zero formaldehyde, zero off-gassing) — safe for children, pregnant women and pets
  • No dust or construction debris
  • No power tool noise — our toolkit is a craft knife, squeegee and heat gun only

You can go about your normal daily routine while we work. Many clients work from home during their installation.

Do you remove and reinstall cabinet hardware?

Yes. Hardware removal and reinstallation is included in our standard service. If your existing hardware is damaged or you would like to update it as part of the project, we can discuss hardware sourcing options during the consultation.

What surface preparation do you do before applying film?

Surface preparation is critical to long-term performance, and we take it seriously. Before any film is applied, we:

Clean all surfaces with a dedicated surface degreaser to remove oils, cooking residue and dust

Address any edge delamination or surface damage that would affect adhesion

Allow surfaces to fully dry

Confirm surface temperature is within the optimal application range

Proper preparation is the single most important factor in ensuring film adhesion holds for the full rated lifespan.

Can you wrap surfaces with existing mold or damage?

If mold is present, it must be treated before film application. We will identify this during the consultation and advise on the treatment process. The general steps are:

Treat all visible mold with an enzyme-based mold-killing solution

Allow the surface to dry completely (24–48 hours in Hawaii conditions)

Apply an anti-mold primer before film application

Wrap all surfaces with sealed edges to prevent future moisture penetration

Film applied after proper mold treatment physically encapsulates the substrate, preventing recurrence for the film's service life. This is one of the most valuable applications of our service in Hawaii's humid climate.

Surfaces with significant structural damage (swollen, soft or crumbling substrate) may not be suitable for film wrapping — we will advise honestly during the assessment.

Cost & Pricing

6 common questions answered.

How much does cabinet wrapping cost in Hawaii?

Pricing depends on the total surface area, the finish selected and the product tier. General ranges for Oahu projects:

  • Small kitchen (up to 10 doors): from $100
  • Medium kitchen (10–20 doors): from $500
  • Large kitchen (20+ doors): from $1,000

Bathroom vanity refresh: from $250

  • Feature wall or backsplash: from $200

Full bathroom surface wrap: from $500

Commercial counter wrap: custom quote

Marine interior wrap: custom quote based on vessel assessment

All quotes are provided free of charge within 24 hours of consultation. Final pricing is always confirmed in writing before any work begins.

How does this compare to the cost of new cabinets?

Film wrapping typically costs 60–80% less than equivalent alternatives:

Film wrapping (medium kitchen): approximately $1,000–$1,500

Cabinet refacing (veneer/thermofoil): approximately $5,000–$10,000

New cabinet replacement: approximately $8,000–$30,000+

Bathroom retiling: approximately $4,000–$15,000

The visual transformation delivered by professional film wrapping is comparable to these alternatives, while the cost is a fraction and the disruption is minimal.

Are there any hidden costs?

No. Our quotes are itemized and transparent. The quote includes:

All film materials (Pacific brand, specified grade)

Surface preparation products and labor

Full installation labor

Hardware removal and reinstallation

Edge finishing and final inspection

Cleanup

The only items that may add cost are: additional scope discovered on-site that was not visible during the consultation (rare), custom-order finishes with premium pricing, or travel fees for remote Oahu locations. We flag all of these proactively before beginning work.

Do you offer discounts for larger projects or multiple rooms?

Yes. Volume discounts apply for projects covering multiple rooms, multiple units (Airbnb portfolio owners and hotel operators), or total surface area above a threshold. Commercial clients with recurring project needs also receive preferential pricing. Contact us to discuss your specific scope.

Is a deposit required?

Yes. We require a 50% deposit to confirm scheduling and order materials. The balance is due upon project completion and your satisfaction sign-off. We do not require full payment before the project begins.

How do I pay?

We accept check, bank transfer, and major credit cards. Invoices are issued through our business entity, Pacific Medical Supply LLC d/b/a Hawaii Film & Wrap, for your records.

Durability & Lifespan

7 common questions answered.

How long does architectural film wrapping last in Hawaii?

Quality professional architectural film, properly installed, typically lasts 7–12 years in Hawaii interior applications. By product tier:

  • Standard Series: 7–10 years (interior, limited direct sun)
  • Scratch-Resistant Series: 9–12 years
  • Scratch + UV Series: 10–12+ years (Hawaii-recommended default for UV-exposed rooms)

These estimates are for normal use with standard cleaning. Harsh abrasive cleaners or extreme sun exposure on unrated film will reduce lifespan.

Will the film peel or bubble in Hawaii's humidity?

No — when properly installed using professional technique and quality Polymeric PVC film with German Jowat Acrylic PSA adhesive.

The adhesive bond of our film is rated for Hawaii's humidity range and has been tested for salt-spray resistance. Edge lifting — the most common failure mode — is eliminated by our precision edge finishing technique.

Consumer-grade vinyl film (contact paper, craft vinyl) can and does peel in humid conditions. Professional Polymeric PVC film does not, provided the surface preparation and application are done correctly.

Will the finish fade or yellow in Hawaii's sun?
  • Standard Series film can show subtle colour shift after 3–5 years of direct sunlight exposure — this is expected and not a defect.
  • Scratch + UV Series film includes a validated UV stabilizer package rated for ≥5 years of direct sun without visible yellowing or colour fade. This is the specification we recommend for all Hawaii kitchens with significant natural light, particularly south and west-facing rooms.

Non-printed deep embossed textures also maintain their appearance better under UV than printed film, because the grain pattern cannot 'wash out' like ink-printed alternatives.

How scratch-resistant is it?

Scratch resistance depends on the product tier:

  • Standard Series: standard surface coating provides reasonable daily-use scratch resistance but can be marked by sharp objects or heavy abrasion
  • Scratch-Resistant Series: PU surface coating rated ≥2H pencil hardness — equivalent to a mid-range lacquer. Handles pet claws, key contact and daily cleaning without visible damage
  • Scratch + UV Series: same PU coat as Scratch-Resistant, with added UV protection

For households with dogs, cats or young children, we always recommend the Scratch-Resistant or Scratch + UV tier.

Is the film easy to clean?

Yes. All three product tiers feature a stain-resistant, hydrophobic and oleophobic surface treatment. In practical terms:

Cooking oil, grease and fingerprints do not penetrate the surface — wipe clean with a damp cloth

Coffee, wine and food spills clean up easily with mild soap and water

The surface withstands tens of thousands of wet wipe cycles without losing texture quality

Avoid bleach-based cleaners and abrasive scrubbing pads — these will reduce surface life over time. Mild dish soap and a soft cloth are all you need.

Can the film be repaired if it gets damaged?

Yes. One of the practical advantages of film wrapping over paint and laminate is the ease of partial repair. If a single door or panel is damaged, that individual piece can be replaced without affecting the rest of the installation.

We maintain stock of our installed finishes for exactly this reason. Contact us with the installation details and we can quote a spot repair within days.

What happens at the end of the film's life?

Film removal is clean and straightforward. Quality Polymeric PVC film with German Jowat Acrylic PSA adhesive removes without leaving residue on most substrates — the original cabinet surface beneath is preserved and undamaged.

After removal, the surface can be re-wrapped with new film (a refresh), painted, refaced, or replaced. Because the film has protected the underlying material throughout its lifespan, the substrate is typically in better condition than an unprotected surface would be.

Hawaii Climate & Safety

7 common questions answered.

Is the film safe for kitchens — including near cooking surfaces?

Yes. Our architectural film is rated for continuous use in kitchen environments:

B1/Class A fire classification: self-extinguishing within seconds of flame removal. Safe for kitchen backsplash and cabinet applications.

Temperature range: -20°C to 80°C continuous exposure — well within normal kitchen ambient temperatures

Food-safe surface: the film surface is compliant for kitchen use

Important note: film is applied to cabinet surfaces and backsplash areas — not to cooking surfaces or areas in direct contact with open flame or heating elements. We assess all installation areas carefully and will not apply film in locations where temperature or flame proximity is outside the rated range.

Is it safe for children and pets? Does it off-gas?

Our architectural film achieves an A+ rating under France's indoor VOC regulation — independently tested by Eurofins over 28 continuous days (Report EFHZ25070525-CG-01, August 2025).

Key results:

• Formaldehyde: 5 μg/m³ — 24 times below the A+ threshold of 10 μg/m³

• Total VOC: 79 μg/m³ — 12 times below the 1,000 μg/m³ A+ limit

• Toluene, xylene, styrene and all other tested compounds: Not Detected

In addition, our film has been independently tested by SGS for 17 phthalate compounds — plasticizers historically associated with health concerns in PVC products. All 17 compounds tested as Not Detected (Report NGBPC25004339301_1, July 2025).

There is no off-gassing during or after installation. You can reoccupy the space immediately — children can play in the kitchen and pets can return the same day. Both test reports are available in full on request.

Does the film protect against mold in Hawaii's climate?

Yes — this is one of the most valuable properties of architectural film in Hawaii specifically.

Mold requires organic material, moisture and warmth to grow. Cabinet wood, MDF and particle board are organic and highly porous — they support mold colonization when exposed to Hawaii's persistent humidity.

Architectural film is inorganic and non-porous. When properly applied, it physically seals the wood substrate, eliminating the mold's access to both oxygen and organic material. The mold cycle is broken at the source.

We also offer interior cabinet wrapping specifically for mold prevention — treating the inside surfaces of base cabinets near sinks and dishwashers, which are the highest-risk areas in Hawaii kitchens.

Is it resistant to salt air — important for coastal Hawaii properties?

Yes. Our film uses German Jowat Acrylic PSA adhesive that has been tested for salt-spray resistance. The adhesive bond does not delaminate in salt-air conditions — a critical failure mode for some alternative films and adhesives.

The Polymeric PVC film base is also chemically inert to salt. Salt cannot degrade the film polymer structure, unlike conventional paint finishes which develop micro-cracks over time in salt-air exposure.

For coastal properties, ocean-facing rooms and yacht interiors, we recommend the Scratch + UV Series for maximum longevity.

What is the B1 fire rating and why does it matter?

B1 is the international fire classification for self-extinguishing surface materials — equivalent to US Class A in applicable tests. It means:

The material stops burning within seconds of removing the flame source

The material does not drip flaming particles

The material has a flame spread index within the Class A range

This rating is required for commercial kitchen surfaces, hotel guest room finishes and public commercial space interiors in Hawaii. We provide fire certification documentation for all commercial installations. For residential use, B1 rating provides peace of mind — particularly for open-plan kitchen/living spaces and families with young children.

Can it handle Hawaii's heat and temperature swings between air conditioning and outdoor temperatures?

Yes. Our Polymeric PVC film is rated from -20°C to 80°C — well beyond the range of indoor temperature variation in Hawaii. The film does not contract, lift at edges, or crack from the thermal cycling between air-conditioned interiors and Hawaii's outdoor warmth. This is tested and validated at the material specification level, not just in theory.

What certifications does your film carry?

Our PVC Decorative Film is independently tested and certified by two of the world's leading laboratories:

  • 1. Eurofins VOC A+ Certification (August 2025)

French Indoor VOC Regulation standard — ISO 16000 series. A+ is the highest possible classification. Our film scored formaldehyde at 5 μg/m³ and TVOC at 79 μg/m³ — both far below A+ thresholds. Testing period: 28 continuous days.

  • 2. SGS Phthalate-Free Certification (July 2025)

17 phthalate compounds tested by GC-MS to CPSC-CH-C1001-09.4 standard. All 17 compounds: Not Detected.

Airbnb & Vacation Rental Questions

5 common questions answered.

Can I schedule the project between guest check-out and check-in?

Yes — this is how most of our Airbnb clients schedule their projects. Depending on your booking calendar:

A bathroom vanity refresh takes 2–4 hours — can be done during standard housekeeping turnover

A kitchen cabinet wrap (small-medium) can complete in 1 day

A full kitchen + bathroom refresh takes 1–2 days

We work closely with hosts' Squarespace, Hostfully or Airbnb calendar to find the minimum-impact window. Contact us with your calendar and we will find the optimal scheduling solution.

Will guests be able to smell anything after installation?

No. Our installation produces zero VOC emissions. There is no smell during or after the project — not during application, not the following day, not at any point. This is one of the key advantages over painting, which consistently generates 'smells of paint' complaints in short-term rental reviews for 24–72 hours after completion.

How durable is it for high-turnover rental use?

Very durable. Our Scratch-Resistant and Scratch + UV series are specifically suited to vacation rental environments because:

PU surface coating resists the scratches and marks that accumulate under frequent guest use

Hydrophobic/oleophobic surface treatment repels cooking oil, grease and food spills — critical for high-turnover kitchens

Scrub-resistant coating withstands the more aggressive cleaning between guest stays

7–12 year rated lifespan means you are not refinishing every 2–3 years like you would with paint

We recommend Scratch-Resistant Series as the minimum specification for vacation rental kitchens.

Will the new kitchen finish improve my Airbnb listing performance?

Based on our clients' experience, yes — consistently. The mechanism is direct:

Better listing photos lead to higher click-through rates on Airbnb and VRBO

A more visually appealing space supports a higher nightly rate ceiling

Guests who feel they received good value mention the space quality in reviews

Higher review scores drive algorithmic ranking improvements on the platforms

Our clients typically report being able to increase their nightly rate by $15–$30 after a comprehensive kitchen and bathroom refresh. At 70% occupancy, a $20/night increase generates approximately $5,100 additional revenue annually — often recovering the entire refresh investment within 3–6 months.

Do you work with property managers who have multiple rental units?

Yes. We offer volume pricing and phased project scheduling for Airbnb portfolio owners and property management companies with multiple units. Contact us to discuss your portfolio scope and we will provide a custom proposal.

Hotels, Small Businesses & Commercial

5 common questions answered.

Does your film meet commercial fire compliance requirements in Hawaii?

Yes. Our architectural film carries B1 fire classification — equivalent to Class A in applicable US tests. This is the standard required for:

Commercial kitchen backsplash and cabinet surfaces

Hotel guest room furnishings and finishes

Public corridor and lobby surfaces

Restaurant and retail interior finishes

We provide fire certification documentation for all commercial installations, including material data sheets suitable for permit submission and insurance records.

Can you complete the work without us closing?

In most cases, yes. Our installation model is designed for occupied commercial spaces:

  • No power tools — zero drilling, cutting or grinding noise

No fumes — zero VOC emissions throughout installation

  • No dust — dry process only, no construction debris

Phased scheduling — we work through your space in sections, allowing normal operations to continue in completed areas

For smaller elements (counter wrap, feature wall, single room), installation is typically complete within business hours before opening or after closing.

Do commercial surface wrapping projects require a building permit?

No. Architectural film wrapping is classified as a surface finish treatment — it does not constitute a structural, mechanical or electrical modification.

This means no permit is required, no inspector visits, and no delays from the Honolulu building department — which is a genuine practical advantage in Hawaii, where permit processing times can extend renovation timelines significantly.

For clients whose commercial leases contain 'improvement approval' clauses, surface film typically falls outside the definition of a structural improvement. We recommend confirming this with your landlord or lease attorney, but this is the common finding.

Can you match our brand colors or a specific design direction?

For commercial branding applications, we offer several options:

Selection from our 200+ standard finishes — which covers most commercial design requirements

Custom color specification (available on 2–4 week lead time with minimum quantities)

Multiple finish combinations — e.g., a corporate-branded counter front in a specific color with a natural wood grain feature wall

We work with interior designers and brand consultants. Please provide your brand guidelines or design reference images at the consultation stage.

Do you offer ongoing maintenance contracts for commercial clients?

Yes. We offer annual property review and maintenance agreements for commercial clients — particularly hotels and multi-unit rental operators — covering condition assessment, spot repairs and refresh scheduling. Contact us to discuss a maintenance agreement appropriate for your property.

Marine & Yacht Questions

5 common questions answered.

Is architectural film suitable for yacht and boat interiors?

Yes — and Hawaii's marine environment is one of the most compelling use cases for our film. Yacht interior panels face continuous salt-air exposure, high humidity, UV from deck hatches and ports, and the expansion-contraction stress of the vessel's movement.

Our Corrosion-Proof specification (tested for salt-spray resistance), combined with the Scratch + UV Series, provides a panel treatment that significantly outperforms conventional varnish maintenance in these conditions. The film seals the wood substrate completely — preventing the salt and moisture penetration that causes traditional finishes to fail.

Does the film add significant weight to the vessel?

No. Architectural film weighs approximately 200–250 grams per square meter — negligible for any vessel. A complete cabin interior treatment typically adds less than 2 kilograms total weight, which has no meaningful impact on vessel performance or stability.

Can the film be applied in a marine environment — at the dock?

Yes. We conduct all marine interior work at the vessel's berth — no haul-out is required. Our installation is a dry process with no solvent fumes, which means we can work safely in confined cabin spaces without creating ventilation or safety concerns for neighboring vessels.

We service all Oahu marinas and conduct a vessel assessment before quoting. We work around the owner's usage schedule.

What wood grain finishes are available for yacht interiors?

Our most popular marine interior finishes include:

Teak — the classic choice for traditional and cruising yacht interiors. Warm golden-brown with authentic interlocking grain.

Dark Teak / Mahogany — deeper tone for a more formal cabin aesthetic

Natural Walnut — sophisticated mid-brown for contemporary interiors

Light Maple or Ash — for Scandinavian-influenced or modern performance yachts seeking a lighter, brighter cabin

Matte White or Cream — increasingly chosen for modern racing and performance yachts

All marine applications use our Scratch + UV Series for maximum UV and corrosion resistance.

How does the cost compare to traditional varnish maintenance?

Over a 10-year period, film wrapping is significantly more economical for most vessels:

Traditional varnish maintenance (Hawaii conditions): approximately $15,000–$25,000 over 10 years, including annual touch-ups and full strip-and-recoat cycles

Film wrapping (one application): approximately $2,500–$4,500 for a standard cabin interior, with zero maintenance cost for the film's service life

In addition to cost savings, film eliminates the annual disruption and revenue loss (for charter vessels) associated with varnish maintenance cycles.
